DONATIONSHISTORY | DESIGN

Portland Habitat for Humanity works towards a community where everyone has a simple, decent, affordable place to live. The non-profit organization builds homes in partnership with future homeowners, individuals, corporations, organizations, and foundations that come together to donate the labor, money, and materials needed for construction. As the oldest Habitat for Humanity affiliate on the West Coast, and the largest in Oregon, Portland Habitat for Humanity has served low-income, hard-working Portland families for over 20 years.  Find out more about Habitat for Humanity...

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™ provides a framework for sustainable green building and development practices . LEED certification demonstrates that a building is environmentally responsible and healthy place to live. Find out more about LEED certification...

Why a LEED certified Habitat home?

Responsible building practices benefit the environment through the reduction of construction waste, and the use of sustainable materials. However, these practices also directly benefit the inhabitants of the home. Increased efficiency will decrease the cost of utilities, further ensuring that the project will remain affordable for the new owners. In addition, the choice of environmentally-friendly non-toxic building materials will decrease indoor air pollution, and associated health effects. A LEED certified Habitat Home demonstrates a commitment to safe quality housing for all, regardless of income. This project will present a livable prototype for future green affordable-housing developments.

How Can You Help?

All Habitat projects rely on the donation of materials and funding. The unique needs of this project will further increase costs, and the need for contributions. If you are able to donate environmentally responsible building materials, or financial resources, please contact Shannon Tennant, Habitat for Humanity, at Shannon_Tennant@pdxhabitat.org or 503-287-9529 Ext. 13.

We are specifically seeking windows, carpeting, and solar panels.

Your donation will help to build the first LEED certified Habitat for Humanity homes in Oregon. As Portland Habitat for Humanity is a 501(c)(3), any gift you give is tax-deductible to the full extent of the law. Your generosity will not only help two hard-working Portland families to realize their dreams of home ownership, but will receive recognition throughout the green building community.  We hope that you consider contributing to this innovative and healthy build.

We would like to thank the following companies for their generous donations:

History

The Cascadia Emerging Green Builders host an annual Natural Talent Design Competition. The '07 winners were challenged to design LEED for Homes Silver rated duplex on the site at 604 NE Webster. The winners of the competition were Scott Mooney of Thomas Hacker Architects and David Posada of GBD Architects.

As part of the mission of the Emerging Green Builders, community development and education is a huge priority. After the design was selected, the EGB’s contacted Habitat for Humanity to discuss the possibility of building the winning design through their program. After weeks of negotiation, Habitat found a site on which we could build and a general contractor. Walsh Construction sponsors a Habitat for Humanity House every year. This year, instead of just sponsoring the building, they are donating the construction management.

Currently, we are in the permitting phase, and plan to break ground in March. The homes will be located on the corner of NE Webster and NE 6th Ave.

The design – a 2200 square foot duplex – will contain both a 4-bedroom unit and a 2-bedroom unit.  Increased energy and water efficiency of these homes will help to lower the utility bills for those who most need long-term affordability as a means to building wealth.
