As a subset of the Cascadia Region Green Building Council, the Emerging Green Builders want to explore the next step of sustainability through the Living Building Challenge.  That's why it is the focus of our 2008 Natural Talent Design Competition, challenging students and young professionals throughout the bioregion to design a Living Building.  As part of the EGB's educational mission, we want to give each entrant the opportunity to learn about Living Buildings in a group of lectures called the Petal Series.

Taking place in Portland in January and February of 2008, the Petal Series will explain the framework of the Living Building Challenge to competition entrants.  An introductory talk will be followed by six lectures focusing on each of the LBC's petals: site, materials, energy, water, indoor quality, and beauty & inspiration.  Experienced practitioners in each category will share their knowledge and continue to serve as a resource throughout the competition.  Although set up in a lecture format, we hope for the series to function as a forum for students and young professionals as they design their own Living Building.
