Integrated design is increasingly promoted as the path to high performance buildings. The benefits are clear to a growing number of design professionals committed to the creation of a more sustainable built environment. The "Real World Integrated Design" series will explore the many facets of integrated design through the experiences of local design teams.

AIA/Portland is now in its new space!! Let's kick off the New Year with a celebration of our new building! Created as a model for sustainable and healthy building practices, its integrated design showcases energy-efficient building methods including: daylighting, double-paned low-e windows; upgraded envelope insulation; a four-unit split-system HVAC arrangement; and roof turbines and a night flush damper to support passive cooling. Waste reduction and water efficiency strategies include: on-site stormwater management; low-flow lavatories and dual flush water closets; a selection of materials with recycled content; use of regional materials; and the specification of certified wood products. The new CFA is also more efficient than a building built to Oregon's Energy code.

The building is currently waiting for LEED-Platinum certification; it is also meeting the carbon neutral goals of the 2030 Challenge and the interim 2010 Target by delivering an estimated energy savings of well over 50% above ASHRAE.

The workshop will feature a project overview presentation supported by visual slides, mock-ups and boards, a panel discussion and building tour.
