The Cardington Apartments generated much controversy when the City of Kelowna decided to locate this supportive housing complex downtown. The project which is jointly funded by the City of Kelowna, BC Housing, Interior Health, John Howard Society and CMHC will provide 30 units of supportive housing for adults who are homeless and addressing addictions and mental health issues. The housing complex, located at 1436 St. Paul Street is slated for occupancy in the fall of 2008.
The four-storey building will contain approximately 300-square-foot studio suites and additional space to provide support services and programs to assist tenants in achieving independence and self-sufficiency. The John Howard Society is the lead partner in the design and development of the apartment building. Once the building is complete, the Society will be the property manager and landlord, with Interior Health providing staffing and support services needed by the residents.
Meiklejohn Architects is the lead architect on the project. Though the project did not target LEED certification, many sustainable building practices were included in the design such as a geothermal heating and cooling system amongst others. This project also touches significantly on the "Social" aspect of the triple bottom line.
