Sustainability in Higher Education
Universities are leading communities in the push for sustainability on a campus-wide basis, similar to what cities could accomplish. Using their own buildings as examples as one of the earliest adopters of sustainability and through use of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Program they are showing that both new and existing buildings can be models of these concepts. The Universities and Colleges of Pierce/Thurston Counties are already known for their proactive approach to protecting the environment and reduced energy use with their facilities design and construction work.
The September branch meeting will highlight one Tacoma campus to show how they have approached sustainability similar to a miniature city concept. Additionally, buidling case studies from two other Universities will be presented by local Architectural firms with the results achieved and/or anticipated.
