About

The Living Building Challenge is attempting to raise the bar and define a closer measure of true sustainability in the built environment, using a benchmark of what is currently possible and given the best knowledge available today. Projects that achieve this level of performance can claim to be the ‘greenest’ anywhere, and will serve as role models to others that follow. Although it may be difficult to achieve the Living Building Challenge, understanding the standard and documenting compliance with the requirements is inherently easy: Just sixteen simple and profound requirements that must be met.

At the heart of the Living Building Challenge is the belief that our society needs to quickly find a state of  balance between the natural and built environments. Cascadia views the release of the Living Building Challenge as an act of optimism and faith in the marketplace to reach high-level goals and project teams are already responding: In the short time since it was unveiled at Greenbuild in 2006, dozens of building owners, designers, developers and contractors throughout North America and around the world have embarked on the Challenge.

The race is on.
