Green Skyline

by Bob Potter — last modified August 26, 2008 10:05 AM

BC is the province with the highest number of LEED certified buildings per capita: 34 at the time of this writing. The provincial government has also committed BC to having its operations "carbon neutral" by 2010; having all new public buildings minimum LEED Gold or equivalent and achieving GHG reduction for the province of at least 33 per cent below 2007 levels by 2020.

Green Skyline serves to showcase past achievements and to give you an opportunity to see a variety of ways in which buildings can achieve LEED and other standards. We hope that you’ll be able to take with you a better understanding of the innovative green and sustainable building features and systems that can be utilized to create these buildings.

Purpose

The purpose of this tour is to give an introduction to green commercial buildings and homes. The audience is British Columbia's design, construction and real estate industries as well as the general public. On the tours, whether you are an industry insider or a member of the general public, you will find out what features are “green,” what the costs and benefits are of green building, and how you can incorporate such features into your next home or future project.

* Each tour is 1 AIBC LU

NEW! Living Site and Infrastructure Challenge

by Bob Potter — last modified January 15, 2008 05:30 PM

Providing transformative models for the future. In 2006 the Living Building Challenge was launched to set a new bar for environmental performance in our homes, offices and buildings of all types. The response has been inspiring as people from all over North America have risen to the challenge and are attempting to transform their projects from buildings that are “less bad” to transformative models for the future. The race is on to build the first Living Buildings in communities around the continent.

And yet, to be ultimately successful in securing a sustainable future, not only do our buildings need to be ‘living,’ so too must the spaces between. What would it mean to design a living roadway? A living park or pier? A living plaza or playground? This document addresses these questions by applying the same logic established in the Living Building Challenge protocol.
