Living Future 08 Keynote Speaker: Paul Hawken
How the largest social movement in history is restoring grace, justice and beauty to the world
Paul Hawken is an environmentalist, entrepreneur, journalist, and author. Starting at age 20, he dedicated his life to sustainability and changing the relationship between business and the environment. His practice has included starting and running ecological businesses, writing and teaching about the impact of commerce on living systems. His books have been published in over 50 countries in 27 languages and have sold over 2 million copies. They include the The Ecology of Commerce, Natural Capitalism, and Blessed Unrest, published in May of 2007.

Policy Design Challenge: Portland’s High Performance Green Building Policy
The City of Portland Office of Sustainable Development (OSD) is seeking individuals and teams to participate in their “Policy Design Challenge.” OSD has developed a draft “High Performance Green Building Policy” that mixes incentives and technical assistance with a “carbon pollution fee,” “carbon waiver” and “carbon reward” depending on the energy efficiency of the new building or major remodel.

On February 1, 2008, Cascadia moved to 1100 – 111 Dunsmuir Street, a LEED-CI Silver space, where Stantec is sponsoring approximately 800 square feet of office space – room for four staff and / or volunteers! 2008 Natual Talent Design Competition- Now Open!
The Cascadia Emerging Green Builders are asking students and young professionals throughout the bioregion to tackle the design of a Living Building! The 2008 Natural Talent Design Competition will engage the bright green young minds of our region as they find solutions to the challenges presented at this level of sustainability. Competition entrants will gain access to the Living Building Forum to aid their progress. The winner will be announced at the Living Future 08 in April, and will win a trip to Greenbuild in Boston and the chance to compete in the national competition.

The Journal of Green Building announces two free online tools for subscribers to their 2008 publishing season—Tips and Strategies on How to Successfully Implement LEED and Professors’ Green Picks. The first of these sections will offer helpful advice on earning points in various LEED categories; the second section will identify materials and technologies that yield superior sustainable performance.
