I have been involved in three areas related to green buildings and sustainable design; First, I have been an architect in private practice with firms in Vancouver BC since 1993, and have had involvement in many projects, built and unbuilt, pursuing performance in sustainable design. I have had experiences, both positive and regrettable, pursuing building design strategies of all stripes, from sea-water cooling, to thermal labyrinths and beyond. My project experience has included local and international projects, including some Cascadia overlap, having worked on several projects in the seattle and tacoma areas. Second, I have been fortunate to keep involvement in planning for the long term, a variety of initiatives seeking to pusure long term urban design and planning solutions for sustainable futures. This includes many planning charrettes in communities, LEED-ND corresponding committee, the Cities plus project, and several community visioning and energy planning projects. Third, I have been active as an educator and now program director for architectural education, most recently working to revitalize the RAIC Syllabus program. As such, i have spent much of the past years in the issues of integration of sustainable design into architectural design education and curriculum.
I have been involved in the leadership of Stantec Architecture, actively pursuing the development of integrated design approaches and training of a next generation of youing architects. In that worls, we have pursued research and innovation, including an award-winning submission to the living futures competition in Seattle in 2007, a team that i led. In architecture forus, I have worked to pursue changes to the CES, integarting sustainable design into requirements for professional architetural education. In projects, we worked to bring leadership to projects for organizations that have yet to embrace green design , including LEED to projects in healthcare, affordable housing and other realms.
My primary involvement that compares would be the leadership of the RAIC Syllabus, and educational non-profit organization. In that group, I have been working to bring together 10 chapters across canada, who work to deliver alternative architectural education in small community groups. this involves working collaboratively and often creatively to pursue high goals of performance, from disparate groups of professionals 'on the ground'.
I believe i have some good 'real world' knowledge of projects and organizational challenges to achieveing high performance in sustainability. I also believe I have a good understanding of the broader societal issues [from Ed mazria, Van Ryn, on down] and some interesting experience about long term planning, that may prove interesting as perspectives to consider.
I believe in the need, purpose and goals of the organization, and am excited to be part of a group in the Northwest that appears positioned to 'take the next step'. The cascadia region has been a consistent leader in affairs of green design, and yet the time is ripe to go that much further, together, cross-border, in a full, cultural dimension.
