Clark has over 18 years of architectural experience that spans across an
array of project sizes & types, including complex renovations, schools,
affordable housing, churches, aquatic centers and LEED buildings.
Technically oriented and an excellent communicator, he particularly enjoys
facilitating and participating in group processes whether they are related
to projects or policy. He is involved with many of SERA's LEED projects as
an in-house coordinator and he works within (and outside of) SERA's office
to promote sustainability, believing the Cascadia region must continue to
provide leadership in this area. He speaks regularly at Natural Step
workshops on "Sustainability within the workplace", summarizing SERA's
processes and continued progress in this area. Clark is currently a member
of the Oregon Natural Step's Advisory Board and is also a Steering Committee
member of the Portland Chapter AIA's Committee on the Environment (COTE). He
has a Bachelor of Environmental Design from the University of Colorado, and
is a registered Architect in the states of Colorado and Washington.
Mark Frankel, Vice Chair, Technical Director, New Buildings Institute, White Salmon, Washington
Mark Frankel has been consulting on sustainable design and energy efficiency
for 15 years, encompassing a broad range of technical topics, including
building and site design, energy use, occupant health, daylighting, high
performance mechanical systems, stormwater management, efficient irrigation
strategies, and others. This work has included extensive evaluation of
comparative life cycle costs for a range of public and private development
models. Mark has consulted on hundreds of capital projects, ranging in scale
from single and multi-family residential projects to large commercial office
buildings all over the country. Prior to joining NBI, Mark worked as a
Senior Consultant on sustainable design at Paladino and Co. in Seattle, and
as a Consultant on energy efficiency at Ecotope Inc, in Seattle. At NBI,
Mark is responsible for the development of technical publications, training
material, and program development to support the incorporation of energy
efficiency strategies in new commercial construction. NBI works with
utilities, government agencies, and other organizations all over the country
to research and promote energy efficiency strategies in buildings.
Dave Ramslie, Sustainable Development Program Manager, The City of Vancouver
Dave Ramslie is the City of Vancouver’s Sustainable Development Program Manager. Dave is responsible for developing and delivering green building programs and policy in one of Canada’s most progressive building markets. His current projects include implementing the first generation of Vancouver’s Green Building’s Strategy and Green Homes Program, as well as developing a strategic plan to achieve carbon neutral buildings city-wide by 2030. Dave also acts as a technical resource, offering green building expertise and assistance to other City projects such as the 2010 Olympic village, EcoDensity and the development of green civic facilities and infrastructure.
When not at home with his wife and daughter, or riding his bike, Dave serves on Canadian Green Building Council’s intergovernmental affairs committee and the LEED Canada Pilot Technical Task Group. In addition to volunteer work Dave continues to teach and lecture internationally on sustainable urban development at Universities and Technical Colleges, and has worked with other municipal governments in Canada on developing their own sustainable urban development initiatives. Dave is a Fellow of the Kinship Conservation Institute, and a LEED accredited professional.
Debra Larusson Co-Treasurer, Province of British Columbia, Vancouver, British Columbia
Debra Larusson has managed public sector environmental and
building issues for British Columbia in the Ministry of Environment,
Treasury Board Staff and the former British Columbia Buildings
Corporation (BCBC) since 1990. She is currently a Special Advisor on
sustainability issues to the Deputy Minister’s Policy Secretariat,
Office of the Premier with a Master’s Degree in Public Administration,
and a BA in Political Science and Asian Studies. Debra
designed and established Green Buildings BC, an ongoing program which
has invested over $100 million in private sector capital by energy
performance contractors in public sector buildings, while maintaining
or reducing operating costs and building capacity within the Province
of British Columbia and created BCBC’s first comprehensive
Environmental Management Plan including strategies for contaminated
site remediation and ISO 14001 Certification attainment.
Randell Leach, Co-Treasurer, Chief Credit Officer, Shorebank Pacific, Portland, Oregon
Randell Leach is the Chief Credit Officer at ShoreBank Pacific, the nation's
leading environmental and community development bank. He heads the bank's
efforts to invest in people, businesses, and real estate in the Pacific
Northwest to create strong companies, vibrant communities, and a healthy
environment. To effect the bank's strategy, Randell seeks to invest its
resources where he can 1) help raise awareness of social and
environmental responsibility, and 2) help people and businesses
actively engage in sustainable practices. Randell has created the
bank's lending practice for the sustainable use of real estate, and works
with other members of the financial community (from other bankers to
investors to appraisers) to further embrace environmental opportunities
within their economic models. He has 12 years financial expertise and was
the founder of a financial software company. He currently serves on the
Board of Directors of Portland-based non-profit, Friends of Trees, whose
mission is to inspire community stewardship of our urban forest by bringing
people in the Portland-Vancouver area together to plant, care for, and learn
about city trees. Randell has a business degree from the University of San
Diego.
Lucia Athens, City of Seattle, Green Building Program Manager
Recognized in 2004 by the Sustainable Industries Journal as one of the 25 most influential people in Green Building in the Northwest, Lucia Athens is a licensed Landscape Architect with over fifteen years of involvement in the sustainable design field. During that time, she helped the cities of Austin and Seattle develop their own unique sustainable building programs. Lucia currently manages City Green Building, located at the City of Seattle Department of Planning and Development. Under her leadership, the City developed the nation’s first green building policy adopting LEED, which guides the city’s major capital improvement projects. Currently, these include 38 projects targeted at Silver LEED, 10 of which are already certified. Previously Lucia was Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Georgia. She has worked on sustainable design projects with various NGO’s, including the Center for Maximum Potential Building Systems, Rocky Mountain Institute, and US Global Green. Ms. Athens holds an undergraduate Landscape Architecture degree from Texas A&M University and a graduate Architecture degree from the University of Texas at Austin. During the development of LEED Version 2 (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design sustainable design rating tool), Lucia chaired the Technical Committee on Site and Water Issues. She previously served on the US Green Building Council (USGBC) Board of Directors.
Lynn Barrett, Owner, Paragon Modular Interiors, Anchorage, Alaska
Lynn Barrett is owner of Paragon Modular Interiors which specializes in sustainable interiors. Lynn is a 2nd generation Alaskan and has practiced interior design throughout the State of Alaska for more than 24 years. Lynn is Chair of the Alaska Branch, Cascadia Region Green Building Council Steering Committee. She is a member of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC), and a Professional Member/President-Elect of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). Lynn is LEED Accredited and is the registered designer for the Cold Climate Housing Research Center, located in Fairbanks which is awaiting their LEED Certification. Lynn is also a member of the steering committee for the local Sustainable Building Initiative Task Force and focuses her efforts of educating people about the importance of green building design and construction in Alaska. She is teaching a class at the UAA titled, “Sustainability in the Built Environment”.
Johanna Brickman, Associate Partner, Director of
Sustainability, Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership, Portland, Oregon
Johanna Brickman is responsible for the development and implementation of ZGF's firmwide sustainable design team effort. Since joining ZGF in 2000, Johanna's role has been researching and facilitating the design of efficient and healthy buildings through the innovative use of materials, technology, and design techniques. She is an in-house sustainable design resource to project teams in all ZGF offices, leading EcoCharrettes, coordinating LEED documentation efforts, and leading in-house sustainable design project reviews. She facilitates an ongoing inter-office dialogue about innovative responses to the challenges of building sustainably. Johanna's project work has included institutional, civic, commercial office, health care, laboratory, transit, and large scale residential projects. She has co-authored research papers including a study of Daylighting for Patient Rooms in Northwest Hospitals, funded by the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance. She was instrumental in the founding of the Sustainable Products Purchasers Coalition, on whose board she also serves.
Teresa Coady, Partner, Bunting Coady Architects, Vancouver, British Columbia
Managing and founding Partner of Bunting Coady Architects, Teresa Coady is a
past Vice-President of the Architectural Institute of British Columbia and
is associated with many professional affiliations including the Royal
Architectural Institute of Canada and American Institute of Architects. As
an innovator in sustainable and energy efficient design, Teresa ensures
responsible environmental design for all of the firm's projects. She acted
as an advisor to the British Columbia Energy Code and the National Energy
Code, as a lead facilitator for the BC Hydro, Design Smart Energy Efficiency
Program and the BC Buildings Corporation Green Initiative. Teresa has also
shown exceptional vision and leadership. Her work has been recognized by
local and national awards. Teresa was honored in 1999 as the YWCA Woman of
Distinction -- Entrepreneur and innovator of the Year. She was recently
named to SB05 (Sustainable Buildings 05) 'Team Canada,' a select group of
individuals charged with showcasing Canadian industry achievements at the
Green Building Challenge in Tokyo, and to promote the "Greening" of the
construction industry in Canada.
Ralph DiNola, Senior Design Consultant, PGE Green
Building Services, Portland, Oregon
Ralph Dinola serves as a green building consultant and project manager on
numerous LEED™ registered projects. He has extensive experience with the
LEED documentation process and the costs associated with green building. He
also assists in conceptual design for green building strategies, green
product specifications, and project feasibility studies, as well as plan and
specification analysis for projects seeking LEED certification. Ralph
specializes in green building workshops, the facilitation of eco-charrettes,
as well as delivering the LEED Advanced Training Workshop as a LEED Advanced
Faculty member. Ralph has over 10 years of experience as a designer and
historic preservation specialist. He was project manager for LEED
documentation for the Ecotrust Natural Capital Center, the first LEED Gold
certified historic renovation in the U.S. He was also instrumental in
developing LEED documentation for Viridian Place, the first LEED certified
building in the Pacific NW. While working as a historic preservation
specialist with the National Park Service (NPS), Ralph helped to preserve
and restore more than 50 architecturally significant structures. While at
Roger Williams University, Ralph was also honored with the Historic
Preservation Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement.
Douglas Kearsley, Kearsley Construction, Spokane, Washington
Doug Kearsley has over 30 years of construction experience. He has a degree in
Industrial Engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology. He started his
career as a Systems Analyst for Washington Water Power and was on the Board of
Directors for Vera Water & Power for the last nine years. Doug is president
of Kearsley Construction, Inc. which focuses on the remodel of older public
buildings. Kearsley Construction, Inc. has completely renovated three of the
original historical buildings at Eastern Washington University, Cheney, WA.
Doug Kearsley has extensive experience with selective demolition, restoration
and remodeling of historical buildings. Kearsley Construction is currently
constructing the Spokane Falls Community College – Business & Social Science
building which is a LEED Silver project. Doug is also on the Steering Committee
for the Spokane Branch of Cascadia. He has conducted local seminars on “LEED in
the Field” to help educate contractors, subcontractors and suppliers about LEED
requirements at the project site level. Doug is a recent graduate of the
National Sustainable Building Advisor Program.
Tom Marseille, Principal, Stantec Consulting, Seattle, Washington
Tom's passion for over 25 years has been to deliver high performance, healthy building solutions that provide triple bottom line value. An author of numerous published papers and journal articles and a frequent speaker, Tom has a diverse technical background that underpins his current mechanical sustainable design focus and helps foster the integrative thinking such work demands. As Managing Principal at Stantec Consulting’s Seattle office, he is proud to be a member of a practice that boasts numerous LEED-certified, award-winning projects, a team of bright green consulting professionals, and that also serves as one of only a handful of firms nationwide that provides LEED assessments for the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). Tom is a member of the USGBC/ASHRAE/IESNA jointly sponsored technical Committee tasked with drafting the first ANSI-accredited high performance green building standard. The USGBC’s goal for this standard perfectly aligns with Tom’s aspiration to help bring sustainable building practices into the mainstream.
Brenda Martens, Partner, Recollective Consulting, B.Sc., LEED ® AP, Vancouver, British Columbia
Brenda Martens is a LEED Accredited Professional who has worked in the
building industry for 16 years. She is one of the founding partners of
Recollective Consulting, an integrated green building and sustainable
community consulting firm. Brenda is involved with IDP facilitation,
LEED project management, and actively involved in a number of non profit
or volunteer organizations, including the Canada Green Building
Council's Technical Advisory Group (TAG), the Vancouver Branch Advocacy
and Education Committee, the Development Issues Committee of NAIOP, and
the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources (MEMPR) Integrated
Strategy Steering Committee, among others. Her most important role in
all of these activities is raising awareness of sustainable building
practices and building capacity within the industry.
Dale Mikkelsen, Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, British Columbia
Dale Mikkelsen is the Manager of Planning and Sustainability for the UniverCity Project at Simon Fraser University – a community being developed around “Four Cornerstones of Sustainability”, including Environment, Equity, Education, and Economy. Dale was formerly the
lead project planner for the 2010 Athlete’s Village for the City of Vancouver, and acted as the City’s Green Building Planner. Dale has a graduate degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of British Columbia. He is a board member for the Cascadia Chapter of the Canadian and US Green Building Council, and sits on the British Columbia Green Building Round Table. Dale is a father of 2 wonderful little kids, and tries to live an active and sustainable lifestyle as a model for his children.
Thomas Nelson, Mithun, Seattle, Washington
Tom Nelson is a Design Principal for Mithun with 23 years experience as an Architect. Before joining Mithun in 2005, Tom was a Vice President with HOK Architects in Los Angeles and was involved with HOK’s sustainable design team since its inception more than 14 years ago. For over 2 years Tom was a member of the City of Santa Monica’s Task Force on the Environment where he served on the Technical Advisory committee reviewing the City’s Green Building Design and Construction Guidelines. In 2001 he became HOK’s first LEED® accredited professional. He is a founding board member of the LA Chapter of the USGBC, and served as its Board Chair for two years. He also served on the advisory board of the Santa Monica – Heal the Bay Aquarium. Tom is currently a design review board member for the City of Seattle.
Claudia Newman, Counsel, Bricklin Newman & Dold, Seattle, Washington
Claudia Newman is a Partner at Bricklin Newman Dold, LLP. She
has extensive litigation experience in the fields of state and federal
environmental and land use law and has represented environmental
organizations, citizens groups, individuals, and local governments in a
wide variety of administrative and judicial forums. Her work focus is
on environmental and land use matters involving smart growth, new
urbanism, green building, comprehensive planning, development
regulations, environmental review, and site-specific development
proposals. She has consulted, led, and represented clients throughout
various land use and permitting processes before local and state
governmental agencies for over fourteen years. In addition to appearing
in state and federal courts, she has appeared before a number of
different administrative bodies, including the Growth Management
Hearings Boards, the Shorelines Hearings Boards, the Energy Facility
Site Evaluation Council, and numerous local government hearing
examiners and legislative bodies. She is also a member of the ASHRAE
Standard Project Committee 189, authoring the Standard for the Design
of High
Performance Green Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential.
Melissa Peterson, Program Officer, Enterprise Community Partners, Portland, Oregon
Melissa J. Peterson works as a Program Officer for Enterprise Community Partners in their Portland, OR office. She has coordinated the Green Communities Initiative within the Pacific Northwest region for the past three years. With a background in environmental science and urban planning, she brings a unique perspective to the conversations within the sustainability and community development fields. Her credentials include a Bachelor of Science degree from Messiah College (Grantham, PA) and a Masters degree in Urban and Regional Planning from Portland State University. She is also a LEED Accredited Professional. In her work and play, she seeks to celebrate natural spaces and promote social and environmental equity for communities around the world.

Kathy Wardle, Associate &
Director of Research, Busby Perkins+Will, MES, BA, LEED® AP, Vancouver,
British Columbia
As Associate and Director of Research of Busby Perkins+Will, Kathy directs
the firm's national Sustainable Design Initiative. Through her 4 years at
Busby Perkins+Will she has amassed considerable experience with the LEED
rating system, high performance green buildings and the Integrated Design
Process, managing certification for a number of the firm's buildings
including the successful LEED Gold White Rock Operations Center, and
overseeing product research and feasibility studies for the firm. She has a
strong commitment to sustainable design and construction and has a detailed
knowledge on sustainable product procurement. Kathy is active in the local
green building community and often disburses her green knowledge through
courses and lectures to diverse groups and through her involvement on
project integrated design teams.
Dennis J. Wilde, Principal, Gerding /
Edlen Development, Portland, Oregon
Dennis has been active in construction and real estate development since
1980. Before joining GED as a senior project manager, Dennis was the vice
president of a large regional construction company. He has guided GED's
efforts introducing environmentally responsible efforts in all of their
projects over the last 8 years. The firm has succeeded in demonstrating that
building and managing projects with an environmental ethic is good business.
In addition to his construction background, Dennis has more than twenty
years of experience in urban planning and design. His education includes
master's degrees in both Architecture and City and Regional Planning from
the University of Pennsylvania. Dennis is also active as a board member of
The Oregon Natural Step Network and Caldera. He and his wife Jean, live in
Portland, they have two grown children, Kirsten and Patrick.
