Cascadia Receives Award; Announces Challenge Grant and 100 Friends of Cascadia at AIA Gala

The Cascadia Green Building Council has been awarded a $100,000 matching challenge grant by the Russell Family Foundation to create greater capacity for green building in the Puget Sound region. President/CEO Glen Gilbert and Board Chair Paul Anseeuw (left) announced the grant at the AIA Seattle 2004 Honors Gala on June 26th where Cascadia received this year's Allied Organization Award.

Cascadia also announced its annual campaign called 100 Friends of Cascadia, which has already raised over $50,000 toward the matching challenge. The campaign has 4-levels: Platinum-$10,000, Gold-$5,000, Silver-$2,000, and Certified-$1,000. The Russell Family Foundation will match contributions to 100 Friends dollar-for-dollar up to $100,000, thereby doubling corporate and other donations. Funds raised will enable Cascadia to hire a Vice President of Programs immediately in Seattle (see Help Wanted below) and as soon as possible in Vancouver, BC.

At the AIA Gala, Cascadia thanked the following leaders in green building for being the first to join 100 Friends:

Platinum: Russell Family Foundation, Mithun, Energy Trust of Oregon

Vancouver Gets Gold

On June 17, 2004, Canada Green Building Council CEO Alex Zimmerman presented a LEED-Gold plaque to Vancouver Mayor Larry Campbell at the opening of the City of Vancouver National Avenue Operations Centre. The project received 44 points. 1.5 years in the making, 5 hectares in size, home to 400 staff and Vancouver's first LEED-certified building, the Operations Centre is the new base of operations for engineering crews that build and maintain Vancouver's infrastructure. See LEED Scorecard

First LEED Certified project for the FAA

On May 19, 2004, the Seattle Terminal Radar Approach Control Facility in Burien, Washington, received LEED v2 Gold, making this the first LEED certified project for the Federal Aviation Administration. Adjacent to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, this two story 52,000 square foot building houses air traffic control spaces, administrative offices, and various mechanical, electrical, and telecommunications areas. Within the building, water efficient lavatories and urinals allow for 33% water use reduction. Energy savings of 14% over ASHRAE 90.1-1999 are realized, and additional commissioning and measurement and verification ensure on-going building efficiency. During construction the project diverted 91% of its waste from the landfill. The materials in the building include 129% weighted average recycled content materials and 49% locally manufactured materials, both demonstrating exemplary performance. FSC certified wood was incorporated for 60% of wood based materials and products. To connect employees to the outdoors, 80% of spaces have daylight and 91% have views. See LEED Scorecard

GREEN BUILDING IN THE NEWS:

OIT Housing Could Become Largest Net-Zero Energy Project in U.S.

The New Student Housing proposal for Oregon Institute of Technology may become the largest net-zero energy project in the US. The project designed by Soderstrom Architects of Portland won the OIT Design Competition. The proposed dorms will attempt to qualify for LEED Gold certification with a possibility of obtaining Platinum certification. The design includes three buildings, each housing approximately 100 students. Incorporated into one of the buildings is an academic floor containing classrooms, a demonstration mechanical space with an adjacent lab, and a 70 seat tiered auditorium space. Geothermal resources, photovoltaics, wind generated power, natural ventilation and site-water runoff harvesting are some of the features that contribute to sustainability. The project was recently featured in the Daily Journal of Commerce. Read More. For additional information, contact: dan@sdra.com. Project Brochure.
