This conference brings together some of the top practitioners in the nation on green building and LCA. USGBC Board members presenting include Board Vice Chair and KEEN Engineering CEO Kevin Hydes; Head of the School of Architecture, Carnegie Mellon University, Professor Vivian Loftness; and President of Paladino & Co. and significant contributor to the LEED rating system Tom Paladino. Additional speakers include Rita Schenck, Ph.D.,Executive Director Institute for Environmental Research and Education; Philip White, an expert on LCA software tools; and Glen Gilbert, President of Cascadia Region Green Building Council.
This one day long conference will take place in Portland on Thursday, September 9th. The conference with the same speakers and content will be repeated in Seattle on Friday, September 10th.

Cascadia is pleased to introduce Kollin Min, our new Vice President of Programs, based in Seattle. Kollin is an attorney with nearly 10 years of experience in the non-profit, governmental, and private sectors. Most recently, he served as the Campaign Director for the Cascades Conservation Partnership, a non-profit effort that has protected over 35,000 acres of threatened forestland in the Cascades. Prior to his work with the Partnership, he served as a Senior Legislative Aide to the Speaker of the Washington State House of Representatives, Frank Chopp, and as an environmental and land use attorney at the law firm of Preston Gates & Ellis in Seattle. Kollin received his law degree from the University of Washington, a Master’s degree in environmental policy from Lund University in Sweden and a BA in political science from Yale. He lives in Seattle with his wife, Katja Shaye, and their son, William.

to Cascadia’s Greg Churchill, OR Dept. of Energy and Katrina Shum-Miller,
Green Building Services on being elected to the LEED Schools committee. The
election for new Core Committee members concluded August 16, and the
committee is now full and ready to begin work on the Application Guide for
Schools.
Mr. Kerry Comes to
Portland
Senator
John Kerry ended his Believe in America tour in Portland, OR on
August 13 with 50,000 supporters. It was the largest event of the tour and
the largest political rally in Portland history. Guest speaker actor
Leonardo DiCaprio specifically referred to “green building” in his speech
that focused on the environment and sustainability. Teresa Heinz repeatedly
mentioned sustainable development and renewable energy. Senator Kerry
focused a good part of his talk on energy independence and repeated his goal
of having America be run on 20% renewable energy by 2020.

Busby
+ Associates Architects announced the merger of its firm with Perkins &
Will. This new partnership, Busby Perkins + Will Architects Co., is based in
Western Canada. Busby + Associates and Perkins & Will have been
collaborating on several projects since 2002, including a current project in
Los Angeles. Busby’s commitment to sustainable design will not change. See

Boxwood 100% LEED
Accredited
Boxwood
architects announced that 100% of its 11 professional staff is now LEED
Accredited. Last year Boxwood completed the first full production winery in
the country seeking certification and currently has under construction a
$17.4 million training facility for the City of Seattle which hopes to
achieve a silver level certification.
